I used to email with Frank Johnson and at times he would write about this person that he usually referred to as the "Z person," not as a "he" or "she", but as "they." Also, he told me she/he was intersexed, not transgendered. I do remember he seemed to be rather afraid of him/her, which made me wonder why he never asked her to move out...and then there was silence.
